7 cultural venues in Sant Josep
In Sant Josep there is a full programme of cultural activities throughout the year involving artists and craftworkers, associations, residents, promoters and projects of all kinds. Concerts, films, theatre, exhibitions, workshops, shows and courses are part of a long list of events that take place in different cultural centres and venues in the town. Below is a list of these initiatives.
Caló de s’Oli Concert Hall
This brand-new cultural venue was officially opened in Cala de Bou on 10 October 2021. The Caló de s’Oli concert hall already has a varied agenda of events lined up, featuring theatre productions, film screenings, concerts and numerous different shows and spectaculars. According to Town Hall sources, this new infrastructure aims to provide “a public space for the local community which will be a benchmark for the whole municipal district”.
The design incorporates an open-air theatre seating up to 300 people with the sea as back drop, in addition to the indoor auditorium which is equipped with the latest technology and can accommodate over 240 people. There is also a multi-purpose area in the entrance hall, ideal for holding exhibitions of all kinds.
The auditorium has an excellent screening facility on a par with the finest cinemas, together with a surround sound system that can provide optimal performance for film screenings and music concerts. The 8×5 metre screen with 2K resolution will offer the best possible viewing experience.
Can Jeroni Culture Centre
This emblematic building is located in Sant Josep town centre. Its original structure was subjected to an ambitious renovation in order to accommodate several multipurpose spaces. Inaugurated in 2016, Can Jeroni consists of an auditorium with a capacity for 165 people, divided into a stall and an amphitheatre. The hall is fully equipped with audio-visual resources to enable the projection of films – its free auteur film seasons are very popular – and the holding of concerts, plays and events of all kinds. Next to this, in an adjacent building, sharing a charming little square, is the Can Jeroni exhibition hall, a two-storey building for the display of small and large-format paintings, sculptures and photographs. The opening hours of Can Jeroni are based on the calendar of programmed events, which can be found on the website. The exhibition hall is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm and from Thursday to Saturday from 6 pm to 9 pm.
Can Curt Exhibition Hall
This hall is a modern facility attached to Can Curt, a historical building in the centre of the tiny village of Sant Agustí. The original house, with its typically Ibizan architecture, has a beautiful tower which, together with that of the neighbouring Can Berri and the church, forms the typical skyline of Sant Agustí. The Can Curt hall offers ample spaces in which exhibitions are held throughout the year, sharing open common areas with the main house. It is open from Thursday to Saturday from 6.30 pm to 9 pm and on Sundays from 11 am to 1 pm.
Sant Francesc Interpretation Centre
The salt flats of Ibiza represent a natural, cultural and economic heritage of enormous importance in the island’s history. In order to disseminate their natural and ethnographic values, the Sant Francesc Interpretation Centre, located in the old parish house of the Sant Francesc church, was opened in 2015. Distributed over two floors, the centre offers a varied range of content, from audio-visual material on the flora and fauna of the Ses Salines Natural Park to old tools used by the salt workers. It is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm in winter and from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm and from 6 pm to 9 pm in summer.
Ses Païsses de Cala d’Hort
The Can Sorà farmhouse, a beautiful example of Ibiza’s rural architecture, occupies a prominent place in the complex that makes up the Ses Païsses archaeological site, which in turn is made up of a Punic and Roman settlement and its respective neighbouring burial grounds. The house and the surrounding area are used as a centre for carrying out all kinds of educational tasks, especially workshops for schoolchildren. The house is linked to the Ibiza Ethnographic Museum and its opening hours depend on the previously scheduled activities.
