Sant Josep’s weather all year round

Sant Josep de sa Talaia covers an extensive area in the southwestern part of the island of Ibiza, in the heart of the Mediterranean region, and so its lands and surrounding waters are blessed with a mild and agreeable climate all year round. It is an added inducement for visitors to explore and enjoy the natural and cultural heritage of the area free from the rigours of climate extremes.

Climate through the seasons

The island of Ibiza in general has warm mean temperatures and low rainfall, although this tends to be irregular, and rain, when it occurs, is usually concentrated over a few days of the year. However, the island retains its natural humidity thanks to its geology and the wealth of water sources stored in the mountainous areas that cover much of the island. The annual average temperatures are between 16 ºC and 18 ºC, and in summer these can rise to 29 ºC and 31 ºC, while in winter, temperatures are unlikely to drop below 5 ºC -9 ºC. To give you an idea, the winter temperature in January, which is traditionally the coldest month, usually ranges from a maximum of 15.5 ºC to a minimum of 8.1 ºC. In spring, temperatures vary, with a maximum of 17.2 ºC and a minimum of 9.3 ºC throughout March, and up to 22.2 ºC and 14.2 ºC respectively in the month of May. In summer, temperatures rise considerably, and reach an average of 30 ºC maximum and 21.8 ºC minimum in August, when temperatures usually reach their highest peak. In the autumn months temperatures vary considerably with a maximum average of 27.6 ºC and minimum 19.5 ºC in September and 16.7 ºC and 12 ºC respectively in November.

Water temperature

For fans of water sports, in Sant Josep water temperatures are usually excellent all year round, and as a rule never dip below 13.3 ºC from January to March. Obviously, in summer the water temperature rises and can be as high as 24.4 ºC in August, dropping slightly to 20.6 ºC in October for example. The island’s climate is affected by the sea which regulates temperatures and makes them milder. As a result, the coastal waters are ideal for diving for example, as there are no worries about the cold-water depths, since deep sea temperatures around the island never drop below 13 ºC.

Open air activities

The hours of sunshine and days of rainfall result in a mild island climate which facilitates outdoor activities, making it easier to enjoy all the natural attractions of Sant Josep. Spring is unquestionably the season of the year when these benign weather conditions are most evident. These are the months that herald the onset of summer, and nature is displayed at its very best, in all its splendour. Sports and leisure activities come to the fore now more than in winter, and the mild and warm temperatures are ideal for sporting events, of which there are several at this time of year with both national and international competitions held here.

This is the season when Sant Josep shows all the fantastic potential of its natural environment. In autumn and winter there are also other sporting competitions, and many professional teams choose these months to train or to stage the preparations for their upcoming events, with all the benefits of a peaceful environment and quality infrastructures.

Natural spectacles

Every season of the year in Ibiza can boast a striking natural phenomenon which is witnessed by residents and visitors alike.

For example, January is the month when the almond trees bloom in Sant Agustí. At this time of year, the fields are awash with white almond blossom. Photography and hiking buffs will enjoy making the most of this stunning landscape.

In April, spring bursts forth in all its splendour, all the fields are bright with colour, and it is the perfect time of year to discover some of Sant Josep’s lesser-known nooks and crannies. Hiking or biking rails, kayaking routes, sailing, the list of activities is endless.

With summer on the way, this is a great time to see the flocks of flamingos arriving at the Ibizan salt marshes although the resident colony is also growing, given the increasingly mild winter temperatures. The wealth of birdlife in the lakes and ponds of the natural park provide a fantastic spectacle.

Although it is possible to enjoy beautiful sunsets all year round, in autumn the pallet of colours in the evening skies is truly impressive.
